A night of letters and dancing
A night of letters, dedicated and read
aloud to me, calls for another few...
Dear Mumma and Papa,
Thank you for everything. I cannot even
begin to put everything I am thankful for in words, but “everything” pretty
much sums it all up. Thank you for the endless love you have showered me with
for my whole life, for the lessons you taught me and how you shaped me into who
I am today.
You have no idea how much I appreciated
your speeches tonight to the whole world, and the lessons and stories you
shared. In that moment, I forgot there were other people around me, and I was
completely absorbed in your words to me. Admittedly, I teared up; I was so
happy.
You have been the most amazing parents in
the whole world and I know we have our arguments but please know how much I
appreciate you.
Love, Naina
Dear Nancy,
You are an amazing sister. The way you
hosted tonight and kept everything a surprise for me made it one of my best
birthdays ever. You organised today beautifully and I really am thankful. Also,
as you lay here next to me, remember I will forever sleep on your side of the
bed, well, because I CAN.
Your dance was beautiful and I am so proud
of your talent and just YOU as a person. I call out to you so much and it’s
crazy how you (almost) always listen to me, and are always able to help me out.
From being the “best finder” in the family to giving fashion advice and
generally keeping a discussion going, you are one of the most special people I
know.
I am so glad that night, when I was dropped
to our cousins’ house, confused, it was because the next day I would have a
baby sister in my arms.
Thank you Nancy,
Naina Didi
Dear Roshee Veer, Manghi Veer and Mani
Veer,
Thank you for scaring away any potential
suitors. Appreciate it.

But seriously, thank you for always being
there for me as big brothers. In Australia I know we mention “our cousins” but that word never sits right
with me. You will always be my “brothers” who are always willing to help, lend
an ear or bash people up.
Roshee Veer, thank you for all the
technical help. You’re a wizard. Being the first to move to Sydney, I thought
you were the coolest. I miss our KFC trips and all your random stories about
pants falling off (how many times have you done that again?).
Sanmeet Veer, thank you for the crazy dancing and love you showed me today. I know despite your injury you made such a huge effort with setting up and dancing (you know which dance I’m talking about). Your song was beautiful and you got my first crush right! Become a singer.

Mani Veer, even thought you mostly act
immature with me, I know that you are always going to be my bigger brother.
Thank you for the speech tonight, it was pretty hilarious, “fobby” and very
heartfelt. It was a great to be reminded of my “first piss” HAHA!
Thank you for making me feel so special,
all three of my Australian brothers. I love you all so much and am so lucky to
have you in my life.
Love,
Naina
Dear Lone Bhabhi, Kavleen Bhabhi and
Supreet Bhabhi,
I loved your performance tonight; it was so
beautiful! I know you all love dancing and wish we could have danced more!
It has been a great addition to have you in
the family as you have added more support and love to our family (kudiyaan da
pyaar). Thank you for giving me Deep, Aryan, Vansh and now the new one (TBA…). You
have helped our family grow as if from a single stalk to a tree. Thank you for
taking me as your own and showing me so much love throughout the years.
Love,
Naina
Dear Christine and Vandana,
Your speech was so sweet tonight. I laughed
so hard at the stories, while others laughed hard at ME. You thought out
everything so well and it just proves why I call you two one of my best friends
from high school.
For the record, I absolutely LOVED the gift
(yes you hyped it up so I opened it the minute I got into the car), and my eyes
and mouth were both left hanging. Ask my mum, she looked at me strangely. Thank
you to everyone who helped make that happen.
I can talk to you two any time, from when
I’m having a tough day and looking for some advice or simply an ear to listen,
to when I want to talk about trash and generally nothing.
You have helped me grow into who I am
today, especially since you saw me through those “awkward teenage years.” I
loved every minute.
Thank you for your effort in making my 21st
birthday so special <3 o:p="">3>
Dear Puneet,
Come on man, Jezza ain’t that bad!
I am lucky to have met another fellow
Punjabi at Newy. I guess that’s as far as our similarities go, but despite
that, I love how we can talk and bond over some crazy stuff. Thank you for
hearing me out whenever I need to chat. I still remember when you got ready to
walk over to my place at 11:30pm because you were scared I’d have a heart
attack. Thank you for being there for me <3 o:p="">3>

Dear Seku,
One of the most random places to find a
great friend is to accidentally move in with them. I honestly think of you as a
big brother, just as you said I am like your little sister. When we met, I got
a certain vibe from you that cannot be described; I was comfortable and felt
like I could be completely natural with you. You don’t feel like that the
moment you meet someone.
I appreciate you having travelled from
Newcastle for tonight, especially with work tomorrow morning.
Your poem was amazing and you have to send
me a copy!
I cant wait for next time we meet, we will
do something crazy like go to the beach at 10pm again! This time we might take
Amber :P

Dear everyone who came tonight for my 21st
birthday party, and others who could not make it. To be honest, I never
expected my 21st birthday to go like this. Everything was kept as a
surprise for me, and it made me enjoy it even more. Thank you all for coming
and celebrating this milestone tonight. Even though I do not see you all as
much as I would like to, know that the only reason I invited you is because I
have thought of you and smiled at least once. Basically, I am thankful to have
you all in my life, whether we crossed paths once, twice, or 100 times. I am a
firm believer in that everything happens for a reason, and maybe that positivity
you gave me was the reason for meeting you.
Thank you again,
Love,
Naina
Dear Tinny Ma, Kohli Papa, Ishi Di, Daljeet Jiju, Sehaj, Suhavi, Mini Di, Suraj
Jiju, Anmol, Rosy Massi, Mamajis, Mamijis and Veers in “Amreeka,”
Your birthday wishes were a great surprise
for me tonight. We played them last on the projector and it was lovely to see
all of your faces wishing me a great 21st. and guess what, your wish
came true; it was the most amazing and special 21st anyone could
wish for! The whole night was a pleasant surprise and your wishes made it a
whole lot more spectacular. To know that despite our distance we are still
close as a family is a beautiful feeling so I thank you for that.
Love,
Naina
It is now 3:06 am on the 5th of
December. I was born at 3:19 am on the 4th of December so
technically I still have 13 minutes of my birth “day” left.
I am thankful for each and every person who
made today special, including simply wishing me over facebook.
I enjoyed planning, organising and
decorating for my party tonight and never thought it would turn out as great as it did.
Thank you
Love,
Naina
Signing off,
